batch renaming files
I am compiling a photo album of a trip, and am merging my own photo files with those of a family member's. The file names of my photos and his don't match, of course, being from different cameras. I am creating a new folder on my HD of all the photos I'm going to use in the album, and am going in chronological order, so mixing his files and mine. I want to keep this new folder in the order I have placed them, rather than file name order. Thus, I want to rename them in the order I've placed them.
I'm running Windows Vista. I have done the usual batch rename (select all - rename to 'filename(001)') and it's reordering my files in the order of original file name, instead of how I've placed them in the folder. I need to know if renaming files in the order placed in a folder is possible in Vista
, irregardless of original file name. Can anyone help??
(Please don't tell me to downgrade/upgrade/switch OS. That's not an option at this point.)
Thanks in advance!

I've been having a problem for the last few days where my computer randomly flashes in high contrast whenever I click anysort of link on IE. It happens when I don't click things, but alot less frequently. I've been trying to google the problem but I've found no answers.
Any ideas as to what's going on?

Windows through this at me today: C00D11B1
..I've read Microsoft's info page on it, located here,
and it was, of course, no help.
I'm currently googling around trying different fixes, so far I'm 0 for 5 and getting kinda pissed off.
Has anyone had this problem? Have a solution? :(
One "solution" I've seen repeatedly, and have tried many times, but does not work is located here
in the first post. The date is 2007 :-/ Basically, when I "restore defaults" the test tone still does not work.
I didn't download anything new or change anything, so I'm not sure where this is all coming from, or more importantly, how to get rid of it >:-(

I have a problem and have been trying to fix it.
I don't remember exactly when this happened, or this would be easy.
A vista update (at least, I believe it was a vista update) managed to mess up my photoshop elements, badly
. None of my effects work anymore, and if I want to undo something, I have to click the select tool to see it actually remove what I did.
I do not know which update it was or what day/month it was that this happened, but I cannot find my install disk anywhere, and I am sick of my photoshop elements being broken!
Does anyone have any idea which update may have caused this so I can undo it? Current Mood: frustrated

Windows Media Player
I'm fairly new to using Windows Media Player-- my question may have already been addressed and if it has been, I apologize for repeating.
My question is: Is there a way to record video played by Windows Media Player?
I know that Real Player has a download program installed that allows you to download media played within the program. I was curious as to whether you could do so with WMP and if so, how?

Weird gridlines showing up in Word 2007
This just started happening, and I can't figure out what's causing it! Gray grids and lines (like lined paper) just started showing up in the background of my Word documents. It's ALL documents - new, old, downloaded, everything. I haven't had a chance to see if they show up when printed, but they're very distracting and I can't work with them there! I've taken to doing all of my writing in notepad for the time being, it's so bad. Rebooting didn't help.
Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated!( screenshot behind the cutCollapse ) Current Mood: aggravated

Vista Internet Explorer 7
So I've been having this problem for probably 3 months now, where IE7 will keep popping up, nothing on it, and it's difficult to close all of the empty browsers. I switched to Mozilla because I cabn't use the IE7 anymore. I wasn't sure what was wrong, and obviously you can't uninstall IE7 from Vista, but I took the Beta 1 update, thinking it might help. It hasn't, and now my McAfee will not scan and my computer is sitting there unprotected.
What is going on? And is there anyway I can get rid of IE7 Beta at least, or fix the problem so that my computer can be protected again.

So...my laptop has lost it's mind. It barely wants to turn on - half of the time I have to hit the "Quick Play" button on it's DVD player to turn it on because the regular power button doesn't want to work - and now I have no sound. I've gone through the little "Help and Support" menu on my computer and it says my sound card is installed and working just fine. Sure, it is... I've also run virus scan and, apparently, my computer is just fine. Except it's silent. (Um, and no, it isn't on mute).
Anyway, anyone know what to do? It's an HP Pavilion dv6000 if that matters, or means anything to anyone.

I'm an up and coming graphic designer and i need to install some fonts, however i cannot seem to get the font into the font folder, it's not like XP where you can just drag the font across into the font folder, i have looked on http://raviratlami1.blogspot.com/2007/02/what-to-do-when-windows-vista-goes-in.html
which has given me some hope however when i go to install the font by clicking on the actual font the fonts folder is no where to be seen...
please help me. it's very frustrating.

Sharing folders through a wireless network.
My husband has a Dell laptop with Windows Vista, and a PC with XP on it (it's also the computer that is connected directly to the modem). He set up a shared folder on the PC in order to access it on his laptop. Now, we had thought something was wrong with the way he set it up on our wireless connection because he couldn't see it when he went into the "network & sharing center" menu. But, his computer (along with the shared folder) shows up just fine on my Mac.
So... is he not looking in the right place? I know nothing about Vista, help! :-\
TIA. Current Mood: confused

Help! Patch, anyone?
All right. So, having switched to Windows Vista*, I've been slowly migrating my favourite programmes over onto my new computer. Most of them I have patches for, but I can't really afford to buy new versions of a lot of software, so if they don't have a patch, I have a problem. One such programme is openCanvas3.03E Plus
. The problem is, even if you try to run the installer for this as an administrator, or go into its properties and change it to run as an XP file, it doesn't want to install. It pops up with the message:
openCanvas3.03E Plus Installer Information: The operating system is not adequate for running openCanvas3.03E Plus.
Technically, I think that the computer has all the necessary specs; it's just that somehow, one of the tests that it runs to see if the computer is compatible comes up negative for Vista. (This is similar to a problem that I had with Painter Classic, but there was a patch for that one.)
I'm looking for a patch, a solution -- anything that works. Even if I have to take apart the .msi installer file PIECE BY PIECE to do it.
Thanks in advance for any help!
*(and no, this is not an option to change, so please, nobody tell me that the solution to this is to downgrade to XP. My old laptop just died horribly; it was an XP. This new laptop has Vista, and non-compatible hardware for downgrading to XP, and it's all that I can afford right now.)

Secret Admin account
OK, so here's my problem. A few weeks ago, my main administrator account for my laptop went kaboom. Or more, I could log on, but as soon as I clicked something/hovered over something, the desktop crashed. I could move the cursor around fine, but everything else was just frozen.
However, my spare guest account I made just in case works fine, but it's got no admin capabilities; I can't install any new programs, etc. I heard somewhere that Vista has a 'secret' admin account so I tried to access/activate it -
- and got that.
So I guess my question is - how can I access the secret admin account from a non-admin account? Or alternatively, how can I access/delete (if needs be) my other admin account (as it's taking up a lot
of room on my laptop and I'd really like it just gone if I can't use it.)
I hope this makes any kind of sense?... and any help would be immensely appreciated!

Start up problems.
Hello, I'm hoping you can help me. Here are the details you ask for on the profile for this comm.
Windows Vista Home Premium
On a Dell Inspiron 1525, laptop.
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU T2330 @ 1.60GHz 1.60 GHz
Memory (RAM): 2.00 GB
System Type: 32-bit Operating system
It says the Recovery (D:) has 50% free and OS (C:) has 70% free.
I haven't recently installed or uninstalled anything. I have AVG Free 8.0 and Lavasoft Ad-Aware both of which are up to date.
Right, I'm not sure if you need to know all that but anyway, here is my problem.
I keep having trouble starting up my computer. Once it is on it works fine. But I repeatedly get to the screen that asks me to do start up repair. I try this which then doesn't work. So I try it again. Still doesn't work.
Then I try the advanced options and try to fix it using the options there. Still doesn't work.
Trying to reset to an earlier version which worked doesn't work. And when I do that it says it can't find the D (drive? disk?).
When I try to reload/recover to a saved version/backup (I'm not sure I'm describing that right) it says there is no version saved.
This keeps happening over and over and seems to be getting worse. And THEN! after I've spent approximately 30 minutes trying to start up and going through various different things - IT STARTS FIRST TIME! I realise that that should be a good thing but it is driving me up the wall! Why do I have all these problems and then it starts with no trouble?!
Please help before I throw my lap top out of the window! xD
Also, here is a copy I made of the problem it says happened. I'm not sure if this is the same problem it always has as I only thought to copy the problem details this one time.
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.0.6001.2.1.0.768.3
Locale ID: 2057
Additional information about the problem:
OS Version: 6_0_6001
Service Pack: 1_0
Files that help describe the problem:
Thanks for any help you can give. Current Mood: infuriated

I'm so mad.
To be completely honest, I'm not even sure how this happened.
I was in the kitchen mopping for a friend whom I am housesitting for this week, and when I came back his cat was *on* my laptop. Well, everything was *gone*. Completely. It was like the laptop was brand new, because there was nothing but the stuff on it that it came with - at least, that is what it looks like.
So I search, find my stuff randomly...and here is where I think I made my mistake. My main folder that I save *everything* in? I move it to the desktop. I decide then that I am going to restart after I have done this, and when I do, everything is back.
Except for the folder I moved to the desktop...my important one...with everything in it.
I have no backup of the files on my computer or on a disk because I get paranoid about stupid stuff, because I actually know very little about computers when it gets down to it. I did try the system restore at a save point from yesterday? That did absolutely nothing for my lost folder. Lost pictures, documents, everything...gone.
I can find the folder, but it says the link is an invalid shortcut now because it has been changed or moved. Any idea what I should do? I could beat myself, really. Current Mood: crappy

LJ not displaying well due to Vista
I am not sure if this is the right place for explaining my LJ problem, but I hope it is! I tried to send a support request at LJ support but I received no answer since nearly a week.
My LJ has the theme "Bunnylicious Blue" (Expressive) and I also bought a new PC with Vista Biz.
My problem is that the bunny feature of the theme (picture in the header part) won't appear when I view my LJ on the new PC; I get only the blue background!!! I tried to view the page on an XP PC and it views correctly. Therefore, my conclusion is that it must be because of the Vista PC.
I tried to change theme and from the previews it seems that all the Bunnylicious themes do not view correctly but the other Expressive theme view well. But I don't want to change theme.
Can someone pls tell me what's going on? Is only the bunny theme allergic to Vista?? Are other people getting this problem too? Is there a solution? I am getting desperate. Please help!
Thanks you for any replies! Current Mood: cranky

I have a new laptop, a Sony Vaio CR notebook that came with Windows Vista Home Premium. I'm having a huge problem, which first started out with iTunes not opening when I clicked it. Then I tried to uninstall it to redownload it, and the uninstaller takes too long and is unresponsive. Now, it's looking like I can't open any files or programs that require Administrator permission. The thing is that I am the only one who uses this notebook and I'm obviously the administrator. It's frustrating. When I open the Start Task Manager and click on the Services tab, it shows a ton of programs that are not running. When I try and fix that, it says that the access is denied. It's so frustrating.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance! Current Mood: frustrated

Livejournal Client for Vista
I have Vista (Ultimate edition) on my happy Dell computer but dearly miss my old Semagic LJ client that worked on XP...Anyone know of any free clients that are anywhere near as nice?

There are three different personal computers in my household, and each computer is incapacitated by its own individual problems. One machine runs Win98, another runs WinMe, and the brand new one runs Windows Vista. (Yes, I'm aware that Win98 is old, and WinXP usually preferred to both of the latter. I'm not changing their operating systems.) I'm somewhat experienced with troubleshooting problems on the computers of family and friends, and I've had some successes with machines that seemed to be lost causes, but I'm at my wit's end with these particular problems. Can you help diagnose these problems, and/or suggest any fixes or work-arounds for these problems? ( Read more...Collapse )

I JUST got a new computer and it's running Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, but it won't let me install any plugins. Someone mentioned that this is not an unusual thing when starting Vista. How do I fix this?
Help, please! Thanks!

I'm a brand new Vista user and I'm trying to get the pictures from my Canon EOS 350D / Rebel XT onto my Acer laptop, but.... I'm stupid. I have no idea how to do it. I've installed the driver from the Canon sight and I can see the camera in Control Panel > Scanners and Cameras, but when I got into Windows Picture Gallery > File > Import, my camera isn't there. Am I missing something?
